Abnormal uterine bleeding is an irregularity associated with the menstrual cycle. This can include irregular bleeding quantity, duration, or schedule, and is common among many women. In more serious cases, an excessive loss of blood during cycles can lead to other health concerns including anemia, zinc deficiency, and interference with daily activities. If you find yourself experiencing abnormal cycles, excessive loss of blood, or irregular duration of menstrual cycles, you may be experiencing abnormal bleeding. Following an evaluation from a medical professional, there are treatments for managing symptoms associated with abnormal menstrual cycles.
Treatments
Specific treatments for managing involuntary uterine bleeding are often pharmacologic treatment options. These can include:
Oral contraceptives– Birth control, or prescription contraceptives are often used to manage irregular bleeding schedules and durations. They have been shown to effectively decrease menstrual flow volume when consistently used over an extended period of time.
Hormonal therapies– Oftentimes, abnormal bleeding is associated with a hormone imbalance. In these cases, specific medical treatments may be used to regulate hormone levels in patients and regulate the menstrual cycle and flow.
Nonhormonal therapies– In scheduled pharmacologic doses, the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be administered. This type of treatment has been shown to improve prostaglandin levels, and reduce menstrual bleeding.
Endometrial ablation– This utilizes heat, cold, and electricity with the use of a laser to effectively destroy the lining of the uterus. This can possibly put an end to periods all together, and patients are required to take birth control until menopause.
For patients that do not experience improvements from medical treatment options, surgical treatment may be necessary.
Hysterectomy– This surgical procedure involves removing the uterus. This type of treatment is typically suggested to women who have enlarged fibroids, endometrial, or uterine cancer.
Myomectomy– For women who experience fibroids, your doctor may suggest this treatment route. During this procedure, the doctor removes the fibroids, or may cut off the vessels that supply them with blood.
