What Are the Benefits of Getting a Chemical Peel Today?

At Allure Laser and Med Spa in Tinley Park, IL, we have clients come in all the time with every type of skin problem imaginable. Some clients are concerned about the tone of their skin, others are concerned by the texture, and still others suffer from active acne or acne scars. We have an all-in-one solution for them in the chemical peel.

What are the Benefits of a Chemical Peel?

The skin benefits of getting a chemical peel are virtually endless. However, the benefits you receive from a given treatment depend significantly on the type of peel you receive. In other words, a light (superficial) peel will provide certain results, but if you have different skin concerns, you may be better suited for a medium peel or deep peel. Here’s what you need to know:

Short Treatment

We’re all busy. We all have trouble justifying the investment of time into our appearance and skin health at times, but skin health is crucial for self-confidence. Self-confidence plays a significant role in our quality of life. The more comfortable you are in your skin, the happier you will be.

That’s why we are excited to offer peels that last no more than 30 minutes. You are more than welcome to come in during your lunch break for a “lunch peel.” You won’t need to schedule time off of work, and you won’t need to sacrifice any time away from your family.

Smooth Skin

One of the most compelling benefits to the health of your skin from a peel is the texture improvements. There are a couple of ways this is accomplished. Primarily, peels trigger your body’s collagen production response. This causes your skin to shore up its underlying structures, adding volume to areas of volume loss.

If your fine lines, moderate wrinkles, and deep folds are caused by volume loss, a peel or two can smooth out these problems. If they’re caused by hyperactive muscles, Botox is your saving grace. You can enjoy the wrinkle-smoothing results of Botox for up to a year and see results within a mere three to five days of treatment.

Acne Management

Acne can be caused by any number of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalance, and touching the skin with oily, dirty fingers. Every cause of acne can occur at any point from the onset of puberty. In fact, many people find they don’t start to suffer from acne until they are in their 30s or 40s.

A superficial peel is perfect for the treatment of acne. Ask about a light peel containing glycolic acid or AHA. These gentle, effective peels are designed for sensitive, acne-prone skin. Such peels will clear up acne within three to five days. After a dozen treatments, even the most severe acne scars can be erased.

Age Spot Removal

Hiding age spots with makeup can be difficult. However, medium and deep peels are excellent for the removal of age spots. You may need between four and six treatment sessions, but we’re confident that after a full course of treatment, you will be deeply satisfied with the results.

Sun Damage Reversal

The UVA and UVB rays of the sun are rightfully notorious for causing devastating damage to the skin. Because these harmful rays weaken your body’s collagen and elastin and slow its production of these crucial proteins and fibers, the skin shows sun damage early. A peel can erase the sign of this damage.

Collagen Growth Enhancement

Glycolic acid peels, in particular, are well-known for their ability to help your body produce stronger, healthier collagen. Collagen is one of the most important proteins in your body because it keeps your skin looking young, hydrated, tight, and smooth. When you lose collagen, you lose volume in your cheeks, lips, chin, and forehead. Wrinkles are the least of your worries.

Even worse, a lack of collagen results in loose, sagging skin. If you lose a significant amount of weight, the effects of sagging skin are even worse. By encouraging collagen production, your skin will look healthier, younger, brighter, tighter, and smoother for months after treatment. And because producing collagen takes time, you’ll see continuously improving results.

Rapid Results

Do you have an important event, like a wedding or business meeting, coming up? If so, and if you’re not quite happy with the appearance of your skin, a peel is perfect for you. The effects of extra collagen production will take several weeks to be fully apparent, however, the improvement to your skin’s tone, texture, hydration, and health are virtually immediate. Depending on the strength of the peel you receive, your skin can be done peeling in three to five days and reveal the healthy beauty you had in you all along.

Easy Candidacy

Because of how mild superficial peels are, they are safe for all skin types and tones. This is in stark contrast to laser treatments. During your initial consultation, we will review your aesthetic concerns to help you determine if this is the right treatment for you.

Generally, if you have concerns about the signs of aging afflicting your face, neck, or hands, you’re an excellent candidate. However, peels aren’t just for clients who want to reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, treat sun damage-caused wrinkles, and reduce age spots. You may be a good candidate if you want to:

  • Treat freckles or melasma
  • Reverse damage caused by pregnancy or birth control pills
  • Improve the tone and texture of your skin
  • Erase acne scars
  • Erase mild trauma or surgical scars
  • Treat acne

Plays Well With Others

As mentioned previously, peels are the perfect complement to Botox because they treat different types of wrinkles. However, they play very well with other aesthetic treatments, as well. For instance, our clients love to combine a peel with dermal fillers for results that are faster, more durable, and more dramatic.

We proudly offer several types of dermal fillers, including Juvederm, Belotero, Voluma, Radiesse, and Vollure. If you can imagine a skin concern, we have the ability to treat it safely and effectively. For instance, you can augment your lips, chin, and cheeks without ever going under a knife or getting implants.

How to Care for Your Skin After a Peel

The point of getting a peel is to improve the health and aesthetic of your skin. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to get a peel and then neglect to take care of your skin! Here’s how you can get the most out of your peel:

Keep Your Hands Off

A peel lifts up and sloughs off damaged or dead skin cells from the top (superficial) layers of your skin. This reveals beautiful, radiant, healthy skin. It can be tempting to pick at your peeling skin to speed along the process. However, this will hinder rather than help your situation.

If you pick at your skin while it is peeling off, you may cause scarring. Moreover, your fingertips are usually oily and dirty, even if you wash them fairly regularly. You may cause an unintended acne breakout if you touch your face while your skin is peeling and revealing the fresh skin underneath.

Keep Your Hair Back

Few people realize how much they touch their face when they let their hair down. Several strands of hair fall perfectly in front of your eye, causing irritation, and you tuck it back behind your ear. No big deal, right? Remember, touch your face as little as possible after a peel.

To mitigate the risk of subconsciously touching your face, keep your hair in a bun or ponytail if it usually gets in your face. If a breakout occurs, don’t treat it yourself. Let it run its course. You don’t need to be introducing new skincare products into your routine after a peel.

Moisturize

Moisturizing after a peel is extremely important. During your initial consultation, bring in a comprehensive list of skincare products you use. You may be surprised to discover that some products you use are not as gentle as you think. After your peel, your skin is sensitive. Even mildly irritating ingredients should be avoided.

Moisturizer is great for soothing your skin after a peel. However, be careful to use your moisturizer exactly as directed. If you use too much moisturizer, your skin cannot peel effectively and you may prolong the time necessary to see the final results of treatment. We recommend using Aquaphor to moisturize your skin for seven days after treatment.

Wear Sunscreen

Many of our clients receive a chemical peel to reverse sun damage. Reversing sun damage does not make sense if you are just going to go back to your old habits and not wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen. Whether you work inside in front of a window or you are exercising outside, wearing sunscreen is crucial.

To further protect your skin, limit your exposure to sunlight when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. In other words, don’t sunbathe between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. Reapply sunscreen as directed on the bottle. If you can’t stand the smell or feel of liquid sunscreen, we strongly recommend a sunscreen powder or spray.

Let Your Skin Peel

Unfortunately, you shouldn’t receive any mechanical exfoliation treatments until your skin has finished peeling. Remember, avoiding contact with your face is crucial for rapid, dramatic results. This includes rubbing your face with your fingers or an exfoliation tool.

In the three to five days after your treatment that your skin is peeling, remember to avoid all skincare products that aren’t a gentle moisturizer or sunscreen. This means you should avoid using retinol, resurfacing acids, facial scrubs, and cleansing brushes. Once your skin is finished peeling, you are free to return to your usual skincare routine.

Relax

We often have clients call us three days after their treatment in a panic. They are concerned with their appearance because their skin is peeling. If you look in the mirror a few days after treatment and don’t yet see what you’re looking for, don’t worry. Remember, the skin that is currently visible is comprised of dead skin cells.

Be patient, and in just a couple of days, the world will see the healthy, beautiful skin hidden beneath the surface of dead skin cells. Remember, don’t pick at your skin. Read a book. Play with your dog. Meditate. Do whatever you want to forget about the way your face looks. Your skin will thank you in just a few more hours.
