Treatment for Bleeding Abnormalities

Women typically experience an average time span of about 21 to 35 days between each menstrual cycle. The average expected time of cycles can last a duration of approximately seven days. Women who experience menstrual bleeding less than or greater than 35 day intervals, or bleeding lasting more than seven days with heavier blood loss, are considered to have abnormal bleeding.

What Are The Symptoms?

Common symptoms women experience resulting from abnormal bleeding of their menstrual cycle may include:

  • Bleeding between cycles
  • Heavy flow
  • Menstrual flow for over seven days
  • Bleeding following menopause
  • Bleeding after intimacy
  • Intervals of more than 35 days between cycles
  • Having fewer periods a year

Treatments

Following proper diagnosis by a medical professional, there are options available for treating bleeding abnormalities. Depending on the cause and diagnosis, non-surgical treatment may include:

Birth control pills– This form of contraception contains estrogen and progesterone. They are often used to treat abnormal bleeding that is caused by hormonal imbalances. One benefit of birth control treatments is that they are safe to use over a long period of time.

Non-steroid Anti-Inflammatory Agents (NSAIDS)– These may include pills such as ibuprofen and naproxen, and are used to decrease the amount of blood loss during periods.

In more progressive cases, surgical treatments may be suggested.  Some surgical treatments for treating bleeding abnormalities include:

Dilatation and Curettage (D&C)– This method is recognized as one of the quickest ways to stop acute blood loss from the uterus. If efforts of non-surgical remedies are unsuccessful, this procedure should be considered to prevent further blood loss.

Hysterectomy– If bleeding continues regardless of previous treatments, a hysterectomy could be suggested to patients who have not had any improvements in blood loss, and who also no longer wish to have children. This procedure can cease bleeding because it involves removing the uterus.
