The Simplicity of a Pap Smear

Although a Pap smear isn’t necessary a test you look forward to, it’s an important test as it can detect various cancers and other issues are related to the reproductive system. Most doctors perform the test in order to look for cervical cancer. However, it’s also performed to ensure that your cervix is healthy and to examine your uterus. When you have the test done, the medical professional will gently scrape cells from your cervix to send to a lab to be examined. This is a test that is performed in the office, and you don’t need anyone to take you home because you’re not sedated.

Who Gets the Test Done?

Young women can benefit from a Pap smear when they first begin their menstrual cycle. The doctor can examine the cervix and other parts of the reproductive system to ensure that the cycle is normal and that there are no health issues that could lead to an abnormal period each month or that would lead to future issues with the menstrual cycle. If you’re pregnant, then you should expect to have this test done in the early stages of your pregnancy so that the doctor can make sure your cervix and uterus are healthy for carrying the baby and to ensure that there are no diseases that could be spread from the birth canal to your baby during delivery.

If you have had any kind of sexually transmitted disease or if there have been any indications as to cancer of the reproductive system,  you will likely have routine Pap smears. You should also have a Pap smear if you are HIV-positive or if your immune system is compromised by any other illness. After about the age of 20, you should have a Pap test to determine if you have HPV. While visiting with our team, you will learn about ways to prevent the disease as HPV can cause cervical cancer.
