Essure and Laparoscopic Tubal Sterilization

For women who have completed their family, or no longer desire to have children, there are effective treatment options to prevent pregnancy. With recent medical advancements, there are now specialized surgical and nonsurgical forms of permanent birth control available to you with Essure and Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation.

What Is Essure?

This is an advanced form of permanent birth control that is designed to prevent the chance of pregnancy. During this procedure, a soft and flexible insert is placed in the Fallopian tubes. It is gently inserted through the vagina and uterus. Essure is non-surgical so there are no required incisions or anesthesia incorporated in the process.  After delivering the insert, the body naturally works to form a barrier around it. Overtime, the barrier serves a blockade that prevents sperm from being able to reach the eggs. However, until the barrier is completely developed it is important to continue additional contraceptives in order to avoid pregnancy. Once the process is complete, Essure can provide you with a successful birth control method without any surgical scars or incisions.

Results

After receiving the Essure procedure, there is typically a downtime of only 1-2 days before patients are permitted to return to normal activities. In addition, 3 months after the procedure, an Essure Confirmation Test is performed in order to guarantee optimal results.

What Is Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation

This form of contraceptive is a guaranteed effective procedure. It is commonly referred to as a method of  getting the “tubes tied.” The procedure requires the Fallopian tubes to be blocked off to prevent sperm from traveling to the eggs. This type of birth control is a permanent solution. There are three methods that are used to perform Tubal Ligation including:

  • Placing plastic rings around the tubes to close them off
  • Removing a section of the tubes
  • Heating a portion of  the tube to close them off

Results

Following a Tubal Ligation, there is approximately 4-6 days of required downtime. The results provided by this procedure are a guaranteed option for preventing pregnancy.
