All About Obstetrics

Obstetrics is the medical field concerned with pregnancy and childbirth. A doctor of obstetrics, who is often called an obstetrician, will carefully monitor the overall health of the mother and her child during and shortly after pregnancy. Here at Allure Laser & Med Spa, we are proud to provide these services to our patients and encourage you to learn more about them.

What is Prenatal Testing?

Prenatal testing or prenatal genetic testing is a group of tests done to check the health of the baby and to look for certain birth defects, particularly those caused by chromosomal abnormalities. Some parents may ask for diagnostic tests that indicate whether a developing baby has a certain disorder. Some birth defects, like sickle cell disease or cystic fibrosis, can run in families, and a prospective mother with that type of background may undergo a diagnostic test to make certain their child did not inherit such conditions. Prenatal testing typically involves blood and ultrasound tests. It can be done during the first trimester, second trimester, or both, depending on what conditions the doctor is looking for.

How Do You Help with Fertility Problems?

Doctors generally define infertility as failure to conceive a child after at least a year of trying to do so. As infertility has multiple causes, the first step will be determining the cause. Male infertility, for example, is most often caused by a low sperm count. The doctor will thus ask the father for a sperm sample for analysis.

The doctor will use a variety of imaging and blood tests to examine the woman. In many cases, she will turn out to have a condition, like polycystic ovary syndrome, that affects her ability to ovulate normally. In other cases, she will have abnormalities affecting her cervix, uterus, or Fallopian tubes. Common examples include uterine polyps and uterine fibroids. If the woman had an infection or underwent surgery, she could also have scar tissue causing blockages.

What is Robotic Laparoscopy?

Robotic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique that allows the doctor to examine the patient’s uterus, ovaries, or Fallopian tubes. The laparoscope is a thin tube with a light and camera attached at one end. It will give the surgeon a clear view of the area and help them find any problems. If the surgeon finds something like polyps, they can surgically remove them.
