However, there are treatment options available depending on personalized test results. Learn more about how to treat abnormal pap smear that fits for you.

What Causes Abnormal Pap Smear Evaluations?

The cause of receiving an abnormal pap smear can result from changes in the cervical cells. The changes typically stem from an HPV infection, which is the most common cause of abnormal test results.

Following an initial abnormal result, a second Pap test is often recommended. A colonoscopy biopsy may also be performed. A colonoscopy involves an exam of the cervix with a specialized magnifying device. If an abnormality of the cells is identified, a cervical biopsy may need to be performed for further testing of the cells. A small sample of the tissue is then collected and sent to a lab for further testing.

Treatments

After evaluating the abnormality results and severity, the most effective treatment option can then be determined. In general, there are two ways to treat abnormal cells, these can include excisional or ablative options. These treatments can include:

Excisional

Excissional treatments involve removal of the tissue.
Leep Procedure- If the colonoscopy biopsy results are identified as severe, a leep procedure may be suggested. This type of procedure is performed in-office, or as an outpatient option. During the procedure, a small portion of the cervix is removed in order to prevent the progression of cervical cancer and disease.

Ablative

Ablative treatments are performed to destroy parts of the cervical tissue where the abnormal cells have been found.
Cryotherapy- During treatment a specialized device is utilized in order to freeze the abnormal cervical tissue. The damaged tissue is then sloughed off.
Laser Therapy- This form of treatment uitlizes a focused beam of light that is designed to target and destroy the abnormal tissue.
